How to resize

Resize a photo without stretching it

Pixel dimensions describe how many columns and rows of pixels an image contains. When you enter a new width and height, the browser creates a new image at that size. If the new shape differs from the original, something has to change: either the outer edges are cropped, or the image is fitted inside the frame with space around it. Stretching is the third option, but it distorts faces and text, so this tool does not use it.

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC file. The tool reads its orientation and shows the loaded size.
  2. Enter the target width and height. Leave “Maintain the original aspect ratio” checked when the photo must keep its shape.
  3. Select crop-to-fill or fit-entire-image depending on whether edge trimming is acceptable.
  4. Pick JPG, PNG, or WebP, adjust quality for lossy formats, and resize.
  5. Check the final dimensions and file size, then download the new image.

When should you crop instead of fit?

Use case Better mode Why
Profile photo or thumbnail Crop to fill Fills the frame completely, with no empty bars around the subject.
Document scan or diagram Fit entire image Keeps every edge visible, which matters when content reaches the border.
Photo with room around the subject Crop to fill Usually safe to trim background while keeping the subject centred.
Image with important text near the edge Fit entire image Prevents labels or page numbers from being cut off.

Formats and output quality

JPG is the most widely accepted format and works well for photographs. PNG is useful for screenshots, diagrams, and images that need transparency, but photographic PNGs can be much larger. WebP often produces a smaller file at similar visual quality and is supported by modern browsers, although some older forms and applications may not accept it.

JPEG and WebP quality settings control how aggressively detail is discarded. A high setting is a sensible starting point; lower it only when the resulting file must be smaller. For strict KB limits, use the image compressor after resizing. If you are preparing an Indian exam photo, the exam presets also handle pixel dimensions and KB ranges together.

Questions

Image resizer FAQ

How do I resize an image to an exact width and height?

Choose an image, enter the width and height in pixels, and select “Resize image”. The tool creates a new file at exactly those dimensions. If “Maintain aspect ratio” is enabled, changing one value updates the other so the image keeps its original shape.

Does this image resizer upload my photo?

No. Your browser reads the file, draws it to a canvas, and creates the download locally. The image is not sent to PhotoResize or any third-party server by the tool.

What is the difference between “Crop to fill” and “Fit entire image”?

Crop to fill reaches the exact output shape by trimming the outer edges evenly around the centre. Fit entire image keeps the whole photo visible and adds white space or transparency around it. Choose crop when the subject can tolerate edge trimming, and fit when every part of the image must remain visible.

Which file formats can I resize?

You can open JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and HEIF files. The output can be JPG, PNG, or WebP. HEIC conversion happens in the browser and may take longer on older phones because the converter loads only when needed.

Can I resize an image without losing quality?

Changing pixel dimensions always resamples the image, so some detail can change. This tool uses high-quality smoothing and lets you select JPEG or WebP quality, but it cannot add detail that was not in the original. Avoid enlarging a small image more than necessary.

How do I resize an image to a specific file size in KB?

Use the compression tool instead. The resizer controls pixels, while the compressor searches for a JPEG quality that fits under targets such as 20KB, 50KB, or 100KB.
